About

This is the stage after 12 months or more of your life when you have not had your period. Your menopausal symptoms are on the verge of exiting and no more dealing with “that time of the month” again.

Symptoms

  • Weight changes
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful sex
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Difficulty in sleeping at night

Treatment

Some symptoms of postmenopause can be treated via medication.

  • Hormone therapy has its risks of stroke and blood clots. So, your gynaecologist is your best guide here.
  • Vaginal creams for vaginal dryness and painful sex

Symptoms of postmenopause can be managed by certain lifestyle changes on your own.

  • Exercise, meditate and relax; do things that make you happy
  • Your diet should be rich in phytoestrogens (plant-based sources of estrogen) viz legumes, whole-grain cereals, flaxseed.
  • Reduce the caffeine and alcohol consumption
  • Avoid going overboard in your salt and sugar intake

Risks

  • Osteoporosis – Decreased levels of estrogen can result in bone density loss. Your risk of developing bone fracture and osteoporosis goes up. Bones of the hip, wrist, and spine are where you need to be careful.
  • Cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, and stroke – As you advance in age with menopause, your pace of doing physical activities goes down. This can contribute to high cholesterol and blood pressure which lead to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Vaginal dryness – With menopause, your vaginal tissues become thin and begin to deteriorate thus leading vaginal dryness. Vaginal lubricants ease the discomfort or pain caused due to dryness.
  • Mental health issues – You could face anxiety, depression, and mood swings. This is due to the decreased levels of hormones. Talking about your issues with a friend or a therapist will help.
  • Urogynaecology issues – Those occurring in your bladder and pelvis are known as urogynaecology issues. These include urine leakage, bladder infections, vaginal prolapse, etc.

Routine Checkups

Even though your menstrual years are over, your gynaec visits need to be on your To-Do list.

Pelvic exams, breast exams, pap smears, and mammograms need to be done. An osteoporosis test, such as a bone density scan will also help.

Your health condition will determine the frequency of your visits to your gynaec so consult her/him to stay healthy and fit.
