About Vaginal Thrush

When Thrush, a yeast infection, infects the vagina and/or the vulva with a yeast germ called Candida, it is known as Vaginal Thrush.

Also known as Vaginal Candidiasis, it is not a sexually transmitted infection. 3 out of 4 women experience Vaginal thrush at least once.

Symptoms

  • Intense itching of the vulva and the vagina
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva
  • Burning sensation during sexual intercourse or while urination
  • Whitish-yellow vaginal discharge; can be watery or like cottage cheese

Causes

  • Antibiotics use that can disrupt the vaginal flora
  • Pregnancy
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Birth control pills
  • Lowered immunity levels

Treatment

  • Suppository or cream inside the vagina using an applicator
  • Application of anti-thrush cream in the vulva area
  • Prescribed oral medication by your gynaecologist

Prevention

  • Maintain good hygiene in your genital area; wash it with plain water every day
  • Wear breathable cotton innerwear
  • Avoid douching / usage of intimate hygiene products
