Abavir is used in the management of HIV-1 infection as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). It belongs to the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class. They act by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, thereby preventing viral replication and reducing viral load.
