Remdesivir is an investigational antiviral medicine. FDA and DCGI have authorized the emergency use of remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19 under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). As per the clinical trials, Remdesivir was shown to shorten the time to recovery in some people.
It is a nucleotide analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity and the drug was found to be effective against SARS and MERS, two diseases caused by coronaviruses that are closely related to the COVID-19 causing coronavirus. Nucleosides are made from sugar and nitrogenous base and are the building blocks of DNA and RNA. Nucleoside analog looks like nucleosides and interfere with viral replication and keep new viruses from being formed inside the body.
